Trash Garden II: Better trash

Well I have still not finished unpacking all the boxes that I did not label before the big move. On the other hand I have a back yard. For the first time ever I have a yard. On the other hand we are in drought level two here which means no watering by hose or sprinkler except on Saturday nights. With this in mind and the book my big bro got me me for my birthday I decided to make a self watering container.

As you can imagine this might take some higher grade trash than I would have kicking around in my trash can. So I went to my local Coop grocers and after asking an employee if they had any empty five to ten gallon food safe containers I could have I was promptly escorted through the stock room to where the recycling was and instructed to “take whatever I wanted”. On a side note this is why I like small grocers. Mainly the complete lack of giant trash compactor things parked out back where all trash goes never to be seen again.
I was able to find an empty five gallon bucket of peanut butter and another ten gallon bucket of tahini. Which I promptly stashed in the trunk of my car. Things were starting to fall into place. I swung by a hardware store to pick up some pvc pipe. i don’t know where to find old pipe yet but I am keeping my eyes open. Less than two dollars latter I had enough pipe for three containers. So I headed home to start construction.
I cleaned my buckets and with my power drill and leatherman started hacking away. Click here if you want to see pictures of the various stages of construction. It took me two hours to finish my first container but I am sure the next one will go faster and it will go even faster if I splurge and buy a jigsaw instead of using my leatherman. It is hot here so hopefully my little basil plant will do well. I will post updates with progress.
